Shadow Drawings

This work focuses on the shadow, its inherent character, and symbolism. These images of shadows are representative of a complete shadow, an ethereal three-dimensional form. Shadows are always present, but seldom fully realized. A shadow is not only a silhouette on a surface, but the profile of the objects’ surface deprived of light, and the space between the two.

What if the shadows of objects could be represented in their entirety, with the object that created them removed? This framework would give rise to compelling forms.
In some of the work, the shadow is discernable; other compositions make for an intriguing puzzle. The objects and their scenarios allow for open interpretations, even though the significance of shadows is broad and extensive.

Powdered graphite on paper is the media used for the images. A selection of bristled brushes controls the graphite dusting. Detailed stencils manage and control the graphite.
